Ingredients

  • 4 cups Water
  • 1 cup Tomatoes Chopped
  • 1/2 cup Toor Dal
  • 2 Green chili Slit into halves
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp Tamarind
  • 1 tbsp Jaggery Crushed
  • 3 tbsp Udupi Style Rasam Powder
  • 1 tbsp Coriander Chopped
  • For tempering
  • 1 tbsp Coconut oil
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/4 tsp Hing
  • 2 Dry red chilies
  • 10-15 Curry leaves

Instructions

  1. Add water, tomatoes, toor dal, green chillie, turmeric powder and salt in a pressure cooker and pressure cook till dal is done.
  2. Remove the pressure cooker from heat and let the pressure release.
  3. Add tamarind extract, jaggery and rasam powder and let it simmer for a few minutes.
  4. Mean while, heat coconut oil in a pan.
  5. Add mustard seeds, hinge, dry red chilies and curry leaves and let them crackle for a few seconds.
  6. Pour the tempering over the simmering Rasam.
  7. garnish with coriander leaves.
  8. Serve hot.
