Gur Aur Aate Ka Halwa, or Jaggery and Wholewheat Flour is a tasty, filling sweet dish that is traditional Indian and a staple in most homes. Originally from Punjab, this dessert is thick in consistency, healthy and nutritious and combines jaggery and wheat wonderfully.
It was a regular breakfast in our home during winters while we were growing up. Ghee and jaggery gives body the required warmth necessary to sail through the winter months in Northern India and hence this Halwa is definitely a must make during the winter season.
Wheat is often considered only as an ingredient for preparing chapattis, rotis and naans, and therefore this dessert showcases a wonderful way to prepare this versatile grain. You can make this dessert for festivals too. It is easy to make and can be refrigerated for 3-4 days. Just re heat in a microwave and you are good to go.

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup Ghee
- 1 cup Whole Wheat Flour
- 1/2 cup Gur / Jaggery Soaked in 2 cups of warm water
- 1/2 tsp Cardamom Powder
- 10-15 strands Saffron
- Almond and Pistachio slivers for garnishing
Instructions
- Heat ghee in heavy bottom pan.
- Add atta and roast until it turns golden brown on low flame.
- Keep stirring continuously.
- Add jaggery dissolved in water, cardamom powder and saffron and mix well.
- Cook until halwa thickens and atta has cooked.
- Garnish with almond and pistachio slivers.
- Serve hot.
